Residential Fire Destruction Seminar
As part of Wildfire Awareness Month, Jack Cohen, a scientist with the USFS Missoula Fire Science Lab, will speak about Residential Fire Destruction During Wildfires (his talk will not be about the Fourmile Fire) on October 27, 7-8:30 p.m. at CU, Hale Hall, Room 270,. Here’s a link to Mr. Cohen: http://www.firelab.org/staff-directory/8
The Boulder County Amateur Radio Emergency Services (BCARES) organization is holding a free one day seminar at the Nederland Community Center on Saturday, October 22nd from 9:00 AM until 3:00 PM. There will be a second training Saturday, October 29 from 9AM to 5PM, at the Gold Hill Fire Barn. The purpose of this seminar is to assist individuals who are interested in acquiring their Technician level amateur radio license. This license is required to legally operate a radio on the amateur radio frequencies.
With an amateur radio license, individuals will be able to participate in a new radio network being implemented by BCARES in the foothills and mountains of Boulder County. The network is called MERN and stands for; the Mountain Emergency Radio Network and is intended to provide emergency communications capability when commercial power and or phone/cell service is interrupted for extended periods of time such as events like Four Mile Canyon fire. During non-emergency time, the network is available for personal use by those who are properly licensed.
Class will consist of instructors who will take the students through the requirements necessary to pass the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) test which will be administered on November 9th. The exact time and place will be announced soon.
Students should arrive before 9:00 AM and have a note book and pen to take notes and accumulate handout materials. Everyone is encouraged to bring a lunch since the class will continue during the lunch hour.
If you have questions please contact Allen Bishop at (303) 437-7835 or by email.

Maria Rogers Oral History Program Event
The Maria Rogers Oral History Program and the Carnegie Branch Library for Local History are sponsoring a program about the Fourmile Fire on September 20 at the Boulder Public Library, Main Library auditorium, at 7 p.m. The program will feature two short films about the fire, Saving Gold Hill and PACKED; live music by Ray Smith; and, if time allows, comments from the audience. The films are based on oral history interviews.
The Fourmile Fire burned more than 6,000 acres and 169 structures in the foothills of Boulder County in September 2010. Saving Gold Hill: The Story of the Fourmile Canyon Fire tells how close the residents of this town came to losing both their homes and their history in this historic mining town, and of how firefighters fought the fire.
“The smoke was so thick in here at that point, nobody could tell what was burning and what wasn’t.”
—Bob Mason, Gold Hill resident
PACKED is a film about the Fourmile Canyon evacuees and what they chose to take with them, not knowing if everything left behind would be destroyed. Their choices might be surprising, but each response has something to teach us about the things we surround ourselves with and what is truly irreplaceable.
“The luxury of time creates the problem of decision-making…
you’ve got to think: What do I want? What do I need? What do I love?”
—Joanne Cole, evacuee
Please join us on September 20, at 7:00 p.m., at the Main Library auditorium
of the Boulder Public Library for this FREE Fourmile Fire anniversary program.
Please e-mail Angie Burnham for more information.
